Powell sent a mixed message about whether he thinks the Fed will eventually need to further raise rates or instead just keep the current level of rates in place for a prolonged period.Īnd he said he still thinks that a “soft landing” - in which inflation would fall back to the Fed’s 2% target, without causing a deep recession - is still possible. “And I would also say it’s possible that we would choose to hold steady at that meeting.” “It is certainly possible that we will raise rates again at the September meeting,” he said. This time, though, Powell said the Fed’s policymakers may or may not raise rates again at their next meeting in September. Since it began raising rates in March 2022, the Fed has often telegraphed its upcoming action. Speaking at a news conference, Fed Chair Jerome Powell was noncommittal about any expectations for future rate hikes. ![]() Coming on top of its previous hikes, the Fed’s latest action could lead to further increases in the costs of mortgages, auto loans, credit cards and business borrowing. Wednesday’s move raised the Fed’s benchmark short-term rate from roughly 5.1% to 5.3% - its highest level since 2001. Your only job is to listen when they are speaking to you.By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER (AP Economics Writer) Even when your busy schedule tries to silence your body and mind, they will let you know it is time to rest and reflect. Your body, the one God gave you and genetically wired a certain way, will tell you to lie down. Nor will the Lord put you in a time-out chair. No, a giant hand will not descend from the sky and set you down. In Psalm 23, the psalmist says the Lord “makes me lie down.” This statement is incredibly true. The brightest minds in psychology and religion will tell you rest, meditation, Sabbath, fasting whatever you choose is essential for clarity, peace, and understanding. Actually, it would be a good discipline for most of us to use. It would be wonderful if he did, I know it works. I wonder if he still employs this practice as an adult. While it did not prevent him from losing his temper, it was always an effective tool for managing his anxiety, anger, and frustrations. ![]() Then he would excuse himself and find a place to think. Instead, he would let us know he didn’t want to talk and needed some alone time. When he got older, it was no longer necessary to find a chair. It was funny watching him grow up into this time-out chair process. As a parent, I was amazed he was able to realize this about himself. Then he would find a chair, sit down, and think through his problem.įive minutes later, he would come back a new person ready to tackle any issue. When he was five years old, he would tell us that he was having trouble and needed to sit down for a minute. However, he didn’t necessarily do it when he was in trouble, but when he was frustrated. The time-out chair became so useful, my son started putting himself in it when upset. But, it was amazingly effective in calming our children down. When Peggy first started implementing the time-out chair approach, I thought it weak. Most parents have some form of punishment where a child spends time alone to cool off. This approach is nothing unique to our family. When our children were little, we used to put them in a time-out chair when they were misbehaving. ![]()
